Need for Nuclear Energy

Solar and wind are good alternatives to carbon-based electricity production, but they cannot be relied on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  The sun stops shining; the wind stops blowing.  Hydroelectric dams and geothermal heating are more reliable, but locations for hydroelectric and geothermal electricity production are running out.  Natural gas produces fewer harmful emissions of greenhouse gases and common pollutants, but it still emits greenhouse gases and contributes to global warming.

Nuclear energy produces no greenhouse gases and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Most nuclear plants in the US have been running for more than 20 years with no serious problems.  The Three Mile Island accident occurred in 1979, more than 40 years ago, and the main health effects were relatively minor or nonexistent, due to very slightly elevated radiation levels.
